I don’t have the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, but I was still treated to a jaw-dropping “next-generation gaming” moment this week. It just happened to occur on the PC I already own. I’ve recently been testing the Radeon RX 6800 XT and after days of benchmarking, I stole some downtime and slapped on my Astro headphones, grabbed my Xbox One controller and finally sunk into some DIRT 5, an Xbox Series X and PS5 “launch” title that seemed to be garnering lots of buzz.

Sure, I’ve watched the canned benchmark about 150 times by now (results in the chart below), but my first actual hands-on time with the arcade racer was full of, shall we say, the best kind of PC gaming excess.
