Rich Harris, the creator of Svelte, lifted the curtain over the experiments that have been taking place around Svelte (the UI framework and compiler) and Sapper (Svelte’s application framework). Harris gave a glimpse of a potential future in which Svelte is a serverless-first framework.
While warning the audience of the experimental nature of what will be shown in the talk, Harris nonetheless enthusiastically detailed its motivation:

I haven’t been this excited about Svelte since probably the launch of Svelte 3 and over the next 15 minutes or so I’m going to explain why that’s the case. […]
What I’m going to show you […] isn’t an official announcement from the Svelte team [though the team is aware of it and supports it]. [There isn’t] any guarantee that’s going to happen [or] any guarantee of when things are going to happen. […]
It’s about the future of web development more broadly and there are some ideas out there that I want to try and help push into the mainstream.

As part of a yearlong development effort, Penn State relaunched the University’s official website,, on Oct. 28. The update features a new design based on extensive research and planning, better supports the enrollment information needs of prospective students, and helps various user groups get needed information in fewer clicks.  The site also puts more emphasis on storytelling.
“The website is a front door to the University, and we believe the new, modern site reflects Penn State’s excellence, and community connectedness, and is in line with the expectations of our web-savvy audiences,” said Lawrence Lokman, Vice President for Strategic Communications. “Those expectations require a mobile friendly site aligned with web trends and usability best practices,” he said.
Looking ahead, Lokman added the redesigned site is built to allow Strategic Communications to adapt quickly to changing audience needs and technical advancements.  “We have more than 470,000 users a month on average, and this new site will enable us to more nimbly meet the information needs of prospective and current students, staff and faculty, both now, and into the future.”

The Ministry of Education is to hold two Webinars next month to explore how young people from around the world can collaborate on disease prevention during the COVID-19 crisis. The Webinars are to feature Minister Without Portfolio Audrey Tang (唐鳳) and 18-year-old Web developer Avi Schiffmann. Tang and Anny Chang (張希慈), founder of the International City Wanderer Education Association, are to be the moderators for two online discussions, as part of the Global Youth Trends Webinar, which is organized by the Youth Development Administration, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

“The topic that we’re going to discuss this year is living together in a time of pandemic and digital technology,” Tang said in a video promoting the event. “We look forward to integrating the imagination of the youth.” The pandemic has made global partnerships “more important than ever,” organizers said on the event’s Web site, adding that they hope participants would “think about what we can do together for the world as youth.”
