PlayStation 5 accessibility features promise to embrace all gamers

playstation 5 accessibility features promise to embrace all gamers

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

A lot of products, services, and content are claimed to be designed for all but, most of the time, that “all” refers to physically-abled people. From time to time, we get reminders that even those with disabilities want and deserve to get the same experiences and that manufacturers and creators have to make the effort to be inclusive. With the PlayStation 5’s launch just around the corner, Sony is sending out a message that the next-gen console is truly designed for all thanks to some accessibility features.

SIE boasts that the PS4 already had a handful of accessibility settings designed to cater to one kind of physical handicap or another. Text to speech for those with hearing impairments, inverting colors for those with vision problems, and creating custom button mapping are just some of the ways it has made the console inclusive.
The PlayStation 5 launching in two weeks takes that a few steps further with voice dictation, allowing text input for those unable to type with a keyboard. Those who can type but have trouble hearing, on the other hand, can type out their message to be read out loud for party members. Along with Screen Reader for low vision …

Røkkr hosts Call of Duty tournament for women gamers, attracts Minnesota Mocha

røkkr hosts call of duty tournament for women gamers, attracts minnesota mocha

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Minnesota Røkkr, the Eagan-based esports franchise, is moving to expand the scope of professional videogame playing by hosting a Call of Duty:Warzone tournament for women this week.

The company, owned by the Wilf family that owns the Minnesota Vikings, is the first of the professional Call of Duty League teams to host a tournament in the Women of the eRena series. Games were played Thursday, streamed on ESPN Esports’ Twitch channel, for a $10,000 prize pool sponsored by the shoe company Crocs.

Ashley Glassel, director of content for Røkkr who is captaining a team in the tournament, said the events normalize the inclusion of women at the highest level of esports. The Call of Duty League has 12 teams and 48 players, but none are women.

“Events that give shine to female gamers, whether they are competitors or just trying to create content around the game, are really important to help get their name out there,” Glassel said.

Alesha Horn, a New Brighton-based gamer known as Minnesota Mocha, was one of the people invited by Røkkr parent company Wise Venture Esports to participate.

“I’m over the moon about it, honestly,” Horn said Thursday. “To have an all-women’s …

PlayStation CEO says VR won’t be a ‘meaningful’ part of gaming for years

playstation ceo says vr won’t be a ‘meaningful’ part of gaming for years

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Sony PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan says virtual reality won’t be a meaningful part of interactive entertainment in the near future. Ryan indicated to The Washington Post that VR still has a long way to go, although he emphasized that Sony isn’t giving up on the medium. The statement suggests that an update to Sony’s PlayStation VR headset is years away.
“I think we’re more than a few minutes from the future of VR,” Ryan told the Post. “PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe at some point in the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment. Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some stage? We believe that.” He notes that the upcoming PlayStation 5, which will be released November 12th, supports the old PlayStation VR headset with a special adapter.
Pinning VR’s success to “some point in the future” and ruling out a “meaningful” VR market in 2020 or 2021 isn’t a hugely positive short-term view of the medium — at least compared to Sony competitor Facebook, which just released its Oculus Quest 2 headset. That said, it would be …

Penn reports adjusted earnings hit all-time record in 3rd quarter

penn reports adjusted earnings hit all-time record in 3rd quarter

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Penn National Gaming Inc. reported record adjusted earnings margins Thursday morning.
The Pennsylvania-based casino operator, which runs the Tropicana and the M Resort in Southern Nevada, said its adjusted earnings — before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and rent — hit an all-time record in the third quarter. The positive results come after the company shook up its business model to account for restrictions and limited volumes and offerings, as well as the company’s launch of its Barstool Sportsbook app in Pennsylvania last month.
“As we look ahead, we continue to see solid results across the portfolio in October, which is being driven not only by our margin improvement, but also our sustained revenue performance as we have continued to manage the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. In sum, we believe we can close out the year with positive momentum,” CEO Jay Snowden said in a statement.
More plans for app
Snowden said the Barstool app has been well-received and broke records for the most downloads for the launch of a new mobile sportsbook. As of Oct. 24, nearly 48,000 people have registered through the app in Pennsylvania, and the app had generated a $78 million handle across 30,000 first-time depositors within the first 37 days of operation.
The …

SteelSeries’ new Aerox 3 gaming mice are lightweight and water-resistant

steelseries’ new aerox 3 gaming mice are lightweight and water-resistant

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

SteelSeries’ new Aerox gaming mouse lineup marks a few firsts for the company. It claims both its $60 Aerox 3 wired mouse and the $100 wireless version that will be available on November 10th are the first gaming mice to receive an IP54 rating, giving them a fighting chance against water and dust.
They’re also the company’s first mice to adopt the ever-popular honeycomb shell design, popularized by more niche peripheral makers like Finalmouse and Glorious PC Gaming Race, to name a couple of examples. And with that see-through design, they’re aimed at people who want a lightweight mouse. The Aerox 3 Wireless weighs 66 grams, while the wired version weighs 57 grams (minus the weight of the cable).
For the wireless Aerox 3, it’s SteelSeries’ first mouse to connect via USB-C to recharge, too, which marks a welcome update. Only a few major gaming peripheral companies have started shifting away from Micro USB to USB-C charging in earnest, and I’m happy to see SteelSeries finally take a step toward integrating the less cumbersome, faster charging standard in its products. This mouse includes a USB-C wireless adapter as well as a braided cable to use while it charges.

These changes are exciting, …
