started by ex-aws execs, vendia exits stealth with unique serverless data sharing platform

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Serverless data sharing startup Vendia Inc. is exiting stealth mode today with a platform that melds two powerful technologies in a unique way: public cloud architectures and distributed ledgers.
Vendia’s platform gives companies a way to share information stored inside multiple public clouds and on-premises data centers with partners, in real time, without doing a lot of complicated engineering work. Early use cases include artificial intelligence and machine learning training and management of cross-company supply chains.
The startup, based in San Francisco and Seattle, was founded by Tim Wagner (pictured, left), who created the concept of serverless computing with Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Lambda service, and Shruthi Rao (right), who was previously the head of business development for Amazon Managed Blockchain at AWS.
It’s armed with $5.1 million in capital from a seed funding round led by Neotribe’s Swaroop ‘Kittu’ Kolluri. Other investors, including Correlation Ventures, WestWave Capital, HWVP, Firebolt Ventures, Floodgate and FuturePerfect Ventures, also participated in the round.
Vendia Share, the company’s initial product offering, can be thought of as a cloud-native virtual data lake that’s based on a serverless computing architecture, which means that there’s no need for customers to …

Serverless database startup Fauna raises $27M

serverless database startup fauna raises $27m

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Database startup Fauna Inc. today said that it has raised $27 million in funding to address the rise of serverless computing, which it argues has created a need for a new, likewise serverless approach to managing data.
Madrona Venture Group led the investment. It was joined by Alphabet Inc.’s GV fund, CRV, Quest Ventures, Addition Ventures and several angel investors.
Fauna disclosed the funding in conjunction with the announcement of a leadership shakeup. Former Okta Inc. Chief Product Officer Eric Berg is joining the startup as chief executive officer, while former Snowflake Computing Inc. CEO Bob Muglia is becoming the chairman of the board. Muglia, who is also known for his early role in the development of Microsoft Corp.’s SQL Server database, was one of the angel investors who backed Fauna’s funding round.
San Francisco-based Fauna offers a cloud-based “serverless” database service called FaunaDB. It’s positioning the product as an easier-to-use alternative to databases of the more standard variety. Developers can set up a database deployment in minutes and scale it up or down on demand, while FaunaDB manages the underlying infrastructure automatically.
The startup argues its product solves a key point of friction in application projects, …

Fastly adds greater functionality to serverless computing solution

fastly adds greater functionality to serverless computing solution

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Fastly, a global edge cloud platform company, has added new observability features to its Compute@Edge serverless compute environment solution.Compute@Edge helps companies build applications and execute code on its globally distributed infrastructure without having to manage it directly.

The new features bring customisable logging, real-time and historical metrics, and end to end request visibility to organisations to give developers greater transparency into what happens after code is deployed within a serverless architecture.

The features also offer mission-critical visibility needed to find and fix operational issues quickly, the company states.

Customisable logging enables developers to send real-time logs to 27 supported endpoints and counting. Developers have access to automatically-exposed default log fields, and can also capture custom event details that meet their business needs.

Having access to log data helps developers determine the root cause of a host of potential issues, from infrastructure to end-user, Fastly states.

Real-time and historical metrics for the likes of CPU and RAM utilisation lets developers explore data as it happens or in historical analysis.

This increased visibility allows developers to better monitor application performance and react in real time to keep a site online, which can support revenue and a better end-user experience, according …

how wind mobility built a serverless data architecture : idk.dev

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Guest post by Pablo Giner, Head of BI, Wind Mobility.Over the past few years, urban micro-mobility has become a trending topic. With the contamination indexes hitting historic highs, cities and companies worldwide have been introducing regulations and working on a wide spectrum of solutions to alleviate the situation. We at Wind Mobility strive to make commuters’ life more sustainable and convenient by bringing short distance urban transportation to cities worldwide. At Wind Mobility, we scale our services at the same pace as our users demand them, and we do it in an economically and environmentally viable way. We optimize our fleet distribution to avoid overcrowding cities with more scooters than those that are actually going to be used, and we position them just meters away from where our users need them and at the time of the day when they want them. How do we do that? By optimizing our operations to their fullest. To do so, we need to be very well informed about our users’ behavior under varying conditions and understand our fleet’s potential.Scalability and flexibility for rapid growthWe knew that before we could solve this challenge, we needed to collect data from many different …

Microsoft targets industrial IoT analytics with Azure Digital Twins update

microsoft targets industrial iot analytics with azure digital twins update

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Microsoft Corp. today added a set of new features to Azure Digital Twins, its cloud-based analytics service for industrial “internet of things” applications.
A digital twin usually means a virtual replica of a connected system, such as an industrial robot or a wind turbine, that mirrors the state of its real-world counterpart. The technology is used by industrial companies to find ways of optimizing their operations. A manufacturer, for instance, can create a digital twin of its production line to look for ways of increasing output or to find technical issues.
The biggest enhancement arriving to Azure Digital Twins is a modelling language Microsoft calls DTDL. The language, which the company has developed specifically for digital twin use cases, enables engineers to create more detailed and true-to-life models of systems. A system can be as small as a sensor or as large as an entire city, according to Microsoft.
DTDL generates digital twins by combing information from multiple data sources. A model created in the language can incorporate physical properties of an object, such fan speed and temperature, as well as the conditions under which the object operates in the real world. If a piece of industrial equipment encounters a …
