oracle lands tiktok as reference cloud customer, takes 12.5% stake | zdnet

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Oracle said it will be TikTok’s cloud provider in a deal that gives it a 12.5% stake in the social media network and a key reference customer. In a statement, Oracle said “the technical decision” by TikTok was based on the Zoom reference account. However, TikTok, owned by Bytedance, was facing a Sunday shutdown order over security concerns by President Trump. Trump said he approved the deal earlier Saturday.Oracle CTO Larry Ellison said that TikTok will run on Oracle Cloud. CEO Safra Catz said:Oracle will quickly deploy, rapidly scale, and operate TikTok systems in the Oracle Cloud. We are a hundred percent confident in our ability to deliver a highly secure environment to TikTok and ensure data privacy to TikTok’s American users, and users throughout the world. For Oracle, the cloud deal with TikTok is a win and can give it a higher profile.More:

Will Amazon Split Its Stock? @themotleyfool #stocks $AMZN $AAPL $TSLA

will amazon split its stock? @themotleyfool #stocks $amzn $aapl $tsla

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Could e-commerce and cloud-computing giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) announce a stock split in the near future? It’s quite possible. After all, shares are trading at a lofty $3,000 each.
Assuming shares are trading at this level at the time of a 6-for-1 split, it would put shares at a nice, even $500. Even better for shareholders unwilling to shell out $500 for a single stock, a 15-for-1 split could get shares down to about $200.
Stock splits have been all the rage lately in the financial media. Both Apple and Tesla recently split their stocks, making them more accessible to a wider base of investors. Apple split its stock on a 4-for-1 basis last month and Tesla split its stock on a 5-for-1 basis on the same day.
Perhaps Amazon will be one of the next megacap stocks to jump on the recent stock-split bandwagon.

Amazon already has a history of stock splits
A stock split wouldn’t be a new idea for Amazon’s board. Since the company’s initial public offering in 1997, Amazon has split its stock three times:

2-for-1 in June 1998
3-for-1 in January 1999
2-for-1 in September 1999

With shares up 3,800% since the company’s last stock split, it wouldn’t be surprising …

Davy Jones’s data-centre

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

EARLIER THIS year a ship hauled a large, barnacle-covered cylinder sporting a Microsoft logo from the seas off the Orkney islands. Inside were a dozen server racks, of the sort found in data-centres around the world. Sunk in 2018, and connected to the shore by cable, the computers had spent the past couple of years humming away, part of an experiment into the feasibility of building data-centres underwater. On September 14th Microsoft revealed some results. The aquatic data-centre suffered equipment failures at just one-eighth the rate of those built on land. Being inaccessible to humans, the firm could fill it with nitrogen instead of air, cutting down corrosion. The lack of human visitors also meant none of the bumping and jostling that can cause faults on land.Microsoft hopes some of the lessons can be applied to existing, land-based data-centres. In the longer term, though, it notes that building underwater offers advantages beyond just reliability. Immersion in seawater helps with cooling, a big expense on land. Data-centres work best when placed close to customers. Land in New York or London is expensive, but nearby sea-floor is cheap. More than half the world’s population lives within 120 miles (192km) of the sea. …

Top Stocks in This Cloud Computing ETF | Money & Markets

top stocks in this cloud computing etf | money & markets

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Buying an exchange-traded fund (ETF) can be a great way to gain diversified exposure to a specific sector, industry group or investment “theme.” You can buy a whole basket of individual stocks with just one click of the mouse (or tap of the finger).
For instance, in May, I recommended my Cycle 9 Alert readers make a bullish play on the SPDR Biotech ETF (NYSE: XBI).
I wanted them to have exposure to the entire biotech space during its “search-for-a-vaccine” rally. And even though a viable vaccine has yet to be announced, we rode that rally for a net gain of 113% in just two months! (Note: We bought options on the ETF.)
Of course, while buying a diversified ETF will give you exposure to a broad sector, industry group or theme … you could instead buy only the ETF’s “top” stocks.
That is, if you have a method for determining which of the ETF’s individual stock holdings are “top,” and which are not.
This way, you’ll filter out the companies that will drag down the ETF’s overall performance!
And that’s what my new ETF X-Ray is all about.
I’ll run each of the individual stock holdings …

Alibaba Cloud Launches Personal Computer, Logistics Robots and More at Apsara Conference | Alizila.com

alibaba cloud launches personal computer, logistics robots and more at apsara conference | alizila.com

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Alibaba Group’s cloud computing arm on Thursday unveiled new products and technologies, including a personal cloud computer, at its biggest technology event of the year.At just 60 grams – roughly the weight of an egg – the palm-sized computer is Alibaba Cloud’s latest effort to help users “more easily enjoy the benefits of cloud computing anytime, anywhere, in a cost-effective yet secure way,” said Jeff Zhang, president of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, at the 12th annual Apsara conference.
Connectable to any computer screen, the device offers greater cloud-computing powers than many PCs. For example, the rendering time for one frame of high-resolution animation on the device is a mere 10 minutes, almost nine times faster than its traditional counterparts.
To help users keep their cloud computers in tip-top shape, Alibaba Cloud also created its own self-developed app-streaming software for easy-to-implement system upgrades and licensed app downloads.
“We hope our cloud computer can help people access resilient computing power whenever they need to, so they can conduct complex tasks which usually require sophisticated and powerful PCs, such as video editing, animation rendering, software development, and online customer services,” said Zhang.
Though available only to enterprise partners for the time being, Alibaba Cloud said …

Demand for cloud-computing brings growth back to Oracle

demand for cloud-computing brings growth back to oracle

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Oracle Corp. reported quarterly revenue that topped analysts’ estimates and projected rising sales, in a sign of greater demand for its cloud-computing services while businesses are working remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.
Fiscal first-quarter sales rose 1.6% to $9.37 billion, the Redwood City, California-based company said in a statement last week. Analysts, on average, estimated $9.19 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Oracle’s revenue had declined 6% year-over-year in the previous three-month period. Oracle’s software products include Oracle NetSuite, its suite of ecommerce and enterprise resource planning software for small and midsized businesses, including manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
CEO Safra Catz projected revenue in the current quarter will climb 1% to 3% from a year earlier. Analysts anticipated no sales growth.
Catz and executive chairman Larry Ellison have tried to revamp Oracle’s business model for a new era of computing, in which software is delivered through the internet rather than shipped in boxes on discs. Thursday’s results show that Oracle’s cloud-based business applications lead the way on modernizing the business, even as demand withers for the company’s older technology.
The pair’s latest bet is its pending alliance in the United States with video-sharing platform TikTok, owned by China’ …
