While studying prefrontal cortex development in adolescents, neuroscientist Maizie Zhou came to a realization that would dramatically alter her career path. Seeing how widespread autism was, but how few answers the scientific community had for those affected by it, she decided a different approach—one that is more data-driven and computational—was needed to understand the disorder. So she did what many would consider unthinkable and went back to school to earn a second Ph.D., this time in computer science.
“Beginning a second Ph.D. was a terrifying decision,” says Zhou, a native of China who holds doctorates in neuroscience from Wake Forest School of Medicine and computer science from Stanford University. “There were nights I couldn’t sleep, wondering if I had made a terrible mistake. Fortunately, the journey I took had a positive outcome.”
“In spite of its pervasiveness and that genetic factors are estimated to account for close to 90 percent of a child’s likelihood to develop autism, we have been able to pinpoint the genetic causes of only a quarter of autism cases.”

Data is being created at a breakneck speed, and researchers have their hands full trying to figure out what to do with it.

Though many think of data as a virtual entity, it must be physically stored in data centres around the world. Currently, the total amount of data worldwide is on the order of 10 zettabytes, where one zettabyte equals a trillion gigabytes. This is an unimaginably huge number for the human brain to comprehend – and it’s estimated to double every couple of years.

Physically storing data is an energy-intensive process: information and communications technology chew through 8% of global electricity usage. This is only set to increase as our demand for processing power grows – every tweet, Instagram post and Facebook update needs to be stored somewhere.

We need to find more energy-efficient ways to store data – and quickly.

“Data storage is critical to both computing and long-term storage of our digitised data – which, these days, encompass almost every single aspect of our lives,” says Francesca Iacopi, a materials and nanoelectronics engineer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

Oct. 30, 2020 — World-class researchers working at Perth’s Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research are using the high- performance computing expertise of DUG Technology under a partnership that will enable the Institute to achieve more breakthroughs sooner.
The partnership provides the high-performance computer and storage capability needed to conduct analysis using genomics and other bioinformatics heavy technologies.
Bioinformatics combines biology, computer science, information technology, mathematics and statistics to analyse and interpret biological data.
Associate Director of Research, Professor Alistair Forrest, said the new partnership boosts the research output at the Perkins.
“Access to additional high-performance computing significantly increases our research capacity and allows us to expand the amount of data we can analyse,” Professor Forrest said.

High-performance computers are used to look for disease mutations, they can help analyse the behaviours of a particular cell type that may be causing disease, or can enable researchers to see the range of cells present in a patient’s tumour.
“Affordable genetic sequencing, for example, has resulted in a rapid increase in the amount of genetic data we are analysing,” he said.
