summer uninterrupted: online classes kids can join today

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

School’s out—well, out until August, if all goes well.
As the Department of Education (DepEd) continues to ready teachers, parents, and students for alternative learning modalities to cope with the ongoing pandemic, kids find themselves in an unusually long summer.
Usually, it is during the summer break that parents enroll their children in different programs that hone skills and talent not typically covered by regular classes in schools. But even if kids aren’t allowed to go out and join these usual programs nowadays, worry not. There are online classes parents can enroll their children in. We list some of them here.
Learn to Code | The Coding School

Living in an increasingly digital world, there is one skill that many experts say will be essential in the next couple of years and beyond, and that is coding. The Economic Research Group (ERG) had undertaken a survey of enterprises in May 2020 and the findings were reported in the Financial Express on June 11. The IT firms included in that survey were found to be in e-commerce, web development and other IT services, representing non-software IT firms (NSW-IT). Subsequently, another survey was administered in June on a sample drawn from BASIS member list, all of whom are into software (SW-IT). The respondents in both the surveys were senior executives of the firms — 30 in total, 28 of which are located in Dhaka and two in Chattogram. Compared to the SW-IT firms, the NSW-IT firms use comparatively low skill and technical expertise. As expected, the SW-IT firms are relatively more export-oriented, while the NSW-IT firms largely depend on the local market. This paper contrasts between the two groups in areas of immediate effects and coping strategies those firms adopted.
Since there is a difference of one month between the two surveys, findings presented need to be interpreted accordingly (for NSW-IT, June figures provided in this paper are expected).

E-Commerce for Plant Sales Is Here to Stay, So You Better Be Ready

e-commerce for plant sales is here to stay, so you better be ready

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Mason Day is the Head of Community and Supply at JR Peters, Inc., a greenhouse fertilizer manufacturer. But throughout his young career in horticulture, he’s had an eye on e-commerce in the garden retail industry, and was even the Co-Founder (along with Seth Reed) of GrowIt!, a mobile app that helps consumers connect with local plant retailers.
“We’ve been talking for years about the digital consumer, and this year has expedited that revolution,” Day says. “COVID-19 was a catalyst for every consumer to become a digital consumer.”Advertisement
The problem, however, is that while many retailers have a website and a social media following, they aren’t always active with it, and even fewer have a true e-commerce platform. When the coronavirus hit, some of these retailers were understandably occupied with maintaining inventories. Even if they were virtually communicating with their customers, they weren’t able to actively keep them informed on which plants were available in real time.
There were some businesses that stepped up quickly to either add or update their e-commerce platforms, and Day says he expects the short-term adjustments COVID-19 forced on the industry to lead to long-term growth in online sales.
“If you’ …
