CS: Let’s talk some more about churches and tech in the context of outreach. The big question I have is, were you surprised to find churches engaging in what we might consider predatory behavior? I think I gathered from the film that you find that a lot of pastors at these smaller churches don’t mean to be doing anything nefarious with people’s data, they don’t know how these apps are being used? But others are willing players in the use of microtargeting for political purposes.
Given my own background growing up with a music pastor for a dad and seeing how the sausage is made, when I see that churches are using third-party apps to target the sorts of people who tend to become adult converts—addicts, alcoholics, people with mental health issues, people going through divorce—it doesn’t surprise me at all. I think it’s quite insidious, and it’s an amazing use of technology, but I come from the kind of churches …

Scaling the Challenges of HPC through Big Data and Cloud Offerings

scaling the challenges of hpc through big data and cloud offerings

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Researchers have been using high-performance computing (HPC) for highly computationally intensive tasks like drug discovery research, quantum mechanics, weather forecasting and more. Basically, it has been accelerating breakthroughs in autonomous driving, seismic engineering, oil and gas production, precision medicine, and financial risk assessment. While HPC can perform better when multiple HPC nodes are connected to form a cluster to offer exascale capabilities, some key hurdles may hinder from utilizing its maximum potential. These are processing vast datasets and storing these data and processed insights, all at the lowest power consumption levels.

Addressing the Data Concerns via Big Data
It is well known that data has been anointed as the Oil or Currency of the new digital millennium. HPC would need larger memory to accommodate larger datasets along with persistent memory for storing data on the memory bus instead of storage drives that are synonymous with desktops at home or business laptops. Also to transform the data amassed from source points before allocating to storage spaces, one needs data analytics.  Data analysis can be achieved using either traditional stand-alone computers or by moving data analytics to the cloud. But given the high volume, low veracity, high velocity, wide variety, and high …

Q&A: Big data’s role in medicine, supply chains and smart cities

q&a: big data’s role in medicine, supply chains and smart cities

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Data is incredibly valuable. But right now, it’s being underutilized — and few of us have control over our digital footprint. Here, CyberVein’s global marketing director Pavel Jakovlev explains the network’s vision for big data, its use cases, and how everyday consumers can monetize their personal information.1. Put simply, what does CyberVein do?CyberVein, just like Google, is always in beta. We have incredible developers and strategists, who are working on bespoke data management solutions for a variety of use cases: medical data handling, smart city initiatives, logistics/supply chains and Internet of Things. We would love to see our technology being used anywhere a fast data transfer is required in a decentralized manner.2. How does data monetization work? There’s an ongoing debate about data ethics. More specifically, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal and a number of Netflix documentaries, like The Great Hack and The Social Dilemma, people are becoming aware of just how much data they are exchanging for services provided by Google, Facebook, Twitter and others. This message is also being propagated by Brittany Kaiser, the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower, who became a data ethics advocate and set up the Own Your Data Foundation. We are taking …

Does small data provide sharper insights than big data? Keeping an eye open, and an open mind

does small data provide sharper insights than big data? keeping an eye open, and an open mind

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

(via Shutterstock.com)
Most of the past five-ten years’ attention has been focused on “big data,” especially to fuel data science and machine learning. All of the energy spent on big data obscured something we used to know: good things come in small packages.
Organizations are replete with valuable data on PCs, small databases enriched by models, and ingested external data sources, perhaps in kilobytes or megabytes, or departmental applications separated from enterprise IT systems. It’s a fungible term, small data, with three definitions:

Big Data is too big for humans to understand without powerful computers and algorithms to reduce big data into accessible, understandable, and actionable information. This can occur in many forms, but most often in charts and visualizations
Data that is small in the first place, such as observations at a human scale
An entirely different situation is how to address the problem of fewer data in machine learning models and the core issues dealing with small data sets

To break this down, the first definition isn’t very interesting. It just applied the term “small data” to something we have always done: statistical analysis, visualization, business intelligence. The second definition is profoundly interesting. The third definition is …

Feeding the world byte by byte

feeding the world byte by byte

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

This article was produced in partnership with CGIAR’s Platform for Big Data in Agriculture. Catch up with all the sessions from the Platform’s 2020 Convention here.Despite the utopian promise of “human fuel” meal replacement powders, every human still needs real food, grown on real farms. The importance of agriculture should guarantee its place at the forefront of technological innovation, yet digitalization is taking its time to reach fields and farms. “Somehow there is a missing link in getting data sets to make sense to the policymaking processes,” said Sara Mbago-Bhunu, director of the East and Southern Africa Division at the International Fund for Agricutltural Development. “There is a very deep analytical gap.”Mbago-Bhunu was speaking at the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture virtual convention that took place 21–23 October on computer screens all over the world. While she acknowledges the contributions of GIS-type mapping and national agriculture investment programs, Mbago-Bhunu is not alone in seeing fragmented research divorced from practical application.Ana Castillo Leska, senior specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank, agreed: “At least in Latin America, we don’t see agricultural research transform into solutions that are user friendly for farmers.”Growing a digital strategyThe agricultural …
