Sarann Knight-Preddy broke racial barriers in the male-dominated Las Vegas gaming industry. She became a civil rights icon and key player in the attempted revitalization of the historic Moulin Rouge Hotel-Casino.Sarann Childs was born in Eufaula in June 1920. She married Luther Walker after high school graduation in Okmulgee and moved to segregated Las Vegas in 1942. Finding few work opportunities, Sarann attended business school in Los Angeles. When she returned, she divorced her husband and began working at the Cotton Club. When her new husband William Scruggs got a job at the ammunition depot in Hawthorne, they moved north. She borrowed $600 from her father to buy the Lincoln Bar, renaming it Club Tonga.

At age 30, Sarann made Nevada history becoming the first African-American woman to receive a state gaming license. She operated Club Tonga until the ammunition depot closed in 1957. Returning to Las Vegas, she became a dealer at several clubs, until a 1958 city ordinance banned black women dealers. The NAACP was trying to integrate casinos. If they could find an experienced woman, Jerry’s Nugget would hire a black dealer. While operating a dry cleaners and dress shop, she agreed to a six-month trial – and stayed seven years. Sarann …

PSA: Games Done Quick’s summer speedrunning event kicks off on August 16th

psa: games done quick’s summer speedrunning event kicks off on august 16th

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Games Done Quick’s (GDQ) next big speedrunning marathon for charity will kick off on August 16th at 11:30AM ET / 7:30AM PT on Twitch. This year’s summer GDQ will be a bit different than past years due to the pandemic: instead of taking place in a giant room filled with people, it will be entirely virtual.
But just because the event is online doesn’t mean it should be any less interesting than past years. The schedule is packed with runs, like a Hollow Knight race on Monday, Virtual Boy Wario Land Any% on Wednesday, and Super Smash Bros. 64 Break the Targets All Characters Blindfolded (!!) on Saturday. There’s sure to be some more hidden gems in there. After all, half the fun of GDQ for me is just tuning into the stream whenever I can and watching the incredible skill on display.
GDQ has been hosting speedrunning events since 2010 to raise money for charity, and donations raised during next week’s event will support Doctors Without Borders. Last year’s summer GDQ raised $3,039,596 for the organization, which was a record at the time, but GDQ eclipsed that during the Awesome Games Done Quick event in January by bringing …

REUTERS/Anne KauranenHELSINKI (Reuters) – Rovio Entertainment (ROVIO.HE), maker of the 10-year-old “Angry Birds” mobile game series, on Friday reported a 160% jump in second-quarter adjusted operating profit, helped by increased player engagement amid COVID-19 lockdowns. “We reached record high games revenue driven by the strong performance of our key games,” CEO Kati Levoranta said in a statement. Adjusted operating profit rose to 13.8 million euros from 5.3 million while revenue fell 3.6% to 69.2 million euros due to lower movie revenue, said the Finnish company, which listed its shares in 2017. The company attributed the improved performance to “increased player engagement due to COVID-19” as well as lower marketing costs. “The overall impact of COVID-19, which was visible in a higher level of downloads, daily active users and player engagement, peaked in late April,” Levoranta said. In August 2019, Rovio released a sequel to its successful Angry Birds movie but its movie revenue declined in the second quarter of 2020. However, Rovio said “Angry Birds Movie 2” was among the most watched movies on Netflix during the spring. Reporting by Anne Kauranen; editing by Jason NeelyOur Standards:The …

Stereotypes surrounding so-called “gamer girls” for instance have led to harassment of female gamers online and resulted in a perception of the $150 billion industry as one dominated by men.The industry has been trying to change this by highlighting the variety of people that play video games and throwing the spotlight on initiatives to engage women, ethnic minorities and other underrepresented groups. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) for instance notes that American gamers are almost evenly split between men (54%) and women (46%).But industry employment demographics show a different picture. “The industry is overwhelmingly white and male,” Tanya DePass, director and founder of I Need Diverse Games, a non-profit aiming to diversify the gaming industry, told CNBC. According to the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), 71% of game developers …

Highlights: Padres vs. Dodgers
(1:06)

Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts sure likes hitting homers in bunches. He went bonkers Thursday night against the San Diego Padres (Gametracker). He was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearances. After that …And…And then…First off, congrats to those who have Betts rostered in fantasy baseball. Secondly, this is Betts’ sixth three-homer game in his career. That is tied for the most in baseball history with Sammy Sosa and Johnny Mize (full list here on baseball-reference.com). Bear in mind, Betts is only 27 years old, so while it’s awfully difficult to homer three times in a game, it seems a sure thing that he’ll eventually be the record-holder alone here. Take note that Betts’ third home run came in the fifth inning, so he had time to join the exclusive group of players to have a four-HR game. That has only happened 18 times in history, with the most recent being J.D. Martinez on Sept. 4, 2017. Alas, in the bottom of the seventh, Betts had an infield single. Still, how’s this for a day: 4-4, 3 HR, 4 R, 5 RBI, HBP

Google forced OnePlus to decimate a Fortnite launcher deal, claims Epic Games

google forced oneplus to decimate a fortnite launcher deal, claims epic games

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Epic Games sued Google over pulling Fortnite from the Google Play Store Thursday evening, following a similar lawsuit against Apple.
We might have expected that. What we didn’t expect: Epic claims that Google forced phone manufacturer OnePlus to break off a deal that would have seen a special Fortnite launcher preinstalled on OnePlus phones — and demanded that another Android phonemaker, LG, abandon any plans to do the same.
With OnePlus, Epic claims that Google “forced OnePlus to renege on the deal” after Google expressed ‘concern’ about Epic’s ability to bypass the Play Store. Epic also alleges that the original deal between Epic and OnePlus would have made the launcher available worldwide, but Google “demanded that OnePlus not implement its agreement with Epic with the limited exception of mobile devices sold in India.”

Epic also alleges that Google “prevented LG from pre-installing the Epic Games app on LG devices” because — in LG’s words, apparently — LG had a contract “to block side downloading off Google Play Store this year.”
Google declined to comment on the specifics of these deals when contacted by The Verge.

Without Google blocking these sorts of deals, Epic argues, the studio “could and would negotiate …

Apple vs Epic Games is a bigger conflict than any console war

apple vs epic games is a bigger conflict than any console war

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Everyone expected the PlayStation 5 vs. the Xbox Series X to be the big video game battle of 2020, but it looks like that console war is taking a backseat to a bigger conflict. Epic Games, the makers of “Fortnite,” has filed an antitrust suit against Apple and begun a series of salvos that got the popular battle royale game kicked off the App Store. It began with Epic Games bypassing Apple’s payment service by allowing direct payments to the Cary, North Carolina,-based, company. The way the App Store works is that Apple takes a 30 percent cut from every sale on the platform. By skirting that with its “mega drop” discount, Epic violated Apple’s terms of service.
“Fortnite” was removed from the Apple App Store. Players who have already downloaded the game can still play and spend money, according to the Washington Post, but they will not be able to get the seasonal updates that keep “Fortnite” fresh year after year.
In response, Epic Games filed the lawsuit and created a stinging ad and a hashtag. #FreeFortnite began trending on Twitter soon after Epic launched an advertisement that echoed Apple’s legendary “1984” Mac commercial during the Super Bowl. Epic’ …
