We spoke with the director of Virtual (Black) Reality, Baff Akoto, about how his latest collection of immersive short films tell a connected tale of shared identity.
I wasn’t always a fan of virtual reality. Conceptually, I was on board. It was the practicality of it all – as much as I would’ve enjoyed emulating Ready Player One from the comfort of my home, the associated cost of an Oculus Rift and VR ready PC kept that dream out of reach. And given the fact that VR had come and go multiple times throughout the years, I didn’t think it would last long enough for me to indulge. It had always been a fad. 
But, my views started to change as things progressed.

CHENNAI: The 57th convocaion of IIT Madras on Sunday will be held in a ‘mixed reality’ mode with the help of virtual reality technology where animated avatars of students would receive medals and degrees from dignitaries. For the first time, the institute released a teaser of the new mode of the ceremony scheduled to begin at 6pm. “For the first time in the history of the institute, convocation will be held virtually in aunique ‘mixed reality’ mode, ensuring the safety of all amidst the global pandemic and at the same time enabling our graduating students to have a memorable convocation,” IIT Madras said in an announcement. The unique mode combines the aspects of both real world as well as the virtual world to create a new environment. It will see the interaction of physical and digital objects, it further said. “In every convocation since 1964, everyone looked forward eagerly to the award of the President of India gold medal. The touring virtual-reality exhibition, which debuts at Aurora’s Stanley Marketplace Oct. 23-Jan. 30, 2021, is a 20-minute work of art-meets-technology that deliberately bleeds comfort for the sake of empathy.

Alejandro Iñárritu is a pretty big deal. The Mexican filmmaker has won five Academy Awards for his work conveying human stories through films including Birdman and The Revenant. Now, his latest work is touring the country, starting in Aurora.
CARNE y ARENA (Virtually present, Physically invisible) is a 20 minute virtual reality experience written by Iñárritu and shot by three-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lebezki. The experience opened at 2017 Cannes, making it the first VR work included as an official selection in the festival. It has since won several awards, including an honorary Academy Award. Now, the installation is embarking on a multi-year international tour, and Aurora and Montreal are the first North American cities to host it.
Set in the Chihuahuan Desert, the story is based on true accounts of travelers across the U.S. border. Each viewer begins the experience alone, joining a caravan of Mexican and Central American refugees and immigrants. The film weaves together multiple narratives and introduces human characters as you travel through the simulated space.

In January of this year, the U.S. Military Academy began working with the Penn State Applied Research Lab to facilitate an event called the Virtual Thunderstorm Technology Demonstration. During the demo, nine vendors provided the Rapid Reaction Technology Office (RRTO) from the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) with a solution to enhance small unit lethality on the battlefield. Conversations for this event began between November and December of last year with preparations for the culminating event the week of Oct 5-9. According to Lt. Col. Chris Johnes, the director of the West Point Simulation Center, the solution is the development of a virtual reality simulation rendered by scientific research and development companies. Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, company representatives could not come to West Point to showcase their products live. The event had to be conducted — webinar style. The event kick started on Oct. 5 where each company had 10 minutes to give an overview of their virtual reality product.
