Painesville to allow renewable energy sources in properties

Painesville residents will now have the ability to add renewable energy systems to their properties. An ordinance was passed as an emergency at a Painesville City Council meeting on Sept. 8., granting residents the ability to begin installing renewable energy sources. However, citizens must go through an application process first.  City Planner Lynn White said the legislation allows for renewable energy systems to be considered in zoning codes. Prior to the legislation, White said renewable energy systems were not recognized in their zoning laws.

“Our zoning code is of the nature if it’s not specifically permitted, then it’s not allowed,” White said. “Solar panels were not addressed in our zoning code.”Jeff McHugh, electrical superintendent, said the decision to look into renewable energy sources for the City of Painesville came from residents looking into implementing sources on their properties.”We received some inquiries about our policies regarding customer-owned renewable energy from a few customers who were looking into alternative [or] renewable sources of energy,” McHugh said.

McHugh also said there is a trend regarding the increase in renewable energy sources that the city wanted to address.”This type of energy is becoming a growing trend in the power industry,” McHugh said. ” …
