Patricia M. Glass
Patricia M. Glass, who was elected Manatee County’s first female member of the board of county commissioner in 1978, died Sept. 1. She was 93.
She was elected to the board of commissioners in 1978, became the board chair in 1980 and served as chair seven times during her tenure on the board.
She also served as the chair of the tourist development council five times.
A gerontologist by trade, Mrs. Glass was an advocate for the elderly throughout her career. She led efforts to improve local health care, affordable housing, environmental protection and drinking water resources for county residents.
She also was instrumental in the authorization and funding of a number of public assets, such as the Manatee County Administrative Center, the Manatee County Public Safety Center, the Manatee County Jail and Port Manatee.
Mrs. Glass retired from public service in 2006.
“Pat was a mentor, a friend and an unbelievable leader that so many of us looked to for advice and guidance over the years,” County Commissioner Carol Whitmore of Holmes Beach said.
Mrs. Glass is survived by four children and four grandchildren. Her husband Henry died in 2010.
