mmWave radars and car-use cameras are necessary devices for ADAS and autonomous vehicles although they vary in degree of precision and computing capability, according to industry sources.Tesla electric cars are equipped with a 77GHz 160m-ranging mmWave radar, eight car-use cameras and 12 ultrasonic radars, with data fusion handled by an electronic control unit (ECU), the sources said. But the methods of fusion vary from carmaker to carmaker. Because ECUs incur additional cost, many carmakers are not inclined to adopt such fusion, the sources indicated.According to China-based media, BAS (brake assist system) penetrated 51% of ADAS-equipped new cars sold in the China market at the end of 2019; the penetration for LDW (lane departure warning) was 45%; and for BSM (blind spot monitoring) and ACC (adaptive cruise control), it was 25-40%.
