Virginia Tech women’s golfer Emily Mahar has received an exemption and will compete in the 2020 USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship. The tournament will be played August 3-9 at the 6,561-yard, par 72 Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. This will be Mahar second appearance in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Mahar, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, won her first collegiate tournament in October 2019 at the Princess Anne Invitational in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In doing so, she helped lead the Hokies to their first-ever team tournament title in their five years of competition. Mahar was named the ACC Women’s Golfer of the Month for October 2019 and was an honorable mention Golfweek All-American for the 2019-20 season. The native of Brisbane, Australia is the Hokies all-time leader in scoring average at 73.52. She led the Hokies in scoring average, rounds of par-or-better and Crunch Time scoring this past season. In the final round of the Princess Anne Invitational, she set a school-record with a 5-under 65. She has also competed in numerous international competitions for her native Australia. Mahar will begin play in stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Monday afternoon at 1:37 p.m. …
