A new study by Hootsuite sheds light on trends set to dominate the social marketing landscape in 2021 and beyond
Hootsuite’s 2020 Social Trends Report reveals a marked shift in the way marketers perceive social media. With over 4 billion active users today, social platforms are no longer just branding channels; they are a critical revenue driver for organizations.
“Every second of every day, 14 people create a new social media account—and amidst physical distancing across the globe, the need for brands to pivot, adapt, and overhaul to keep up with complex consumer lifestyle shifts and expectations has only increased,” says Henk Campher, VP of Corporate Marketing at Hootsuite.

Hootsuite’s survey of more than 11,000 marketers in Q3 of 2020 found that 60% of businesses are planning to increase their Instagram budget, and almost half are planning to do the same for Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Notably, for all the hype of TikTok, it has not increased in importance in the investment stack.
The data also shows that customer acquisition is quickly becoming social marketers’ top goal, with 73% of marketers saying it is now their top priority for 2021, compared to 46% in 2019, a 58% Y-o-Y increase. …
