Now, she’s made over $111,000 this year. She shares five unconventional steps that set her up for success as a freelancer, and how you can build your career from the ground up like she did.”Over these past few years, I’ve learned that other people can only tell you what’s worked for them,” Johnson said. “For instance, my family and friends weren’t wrong when they suggested I finish my degree — I just had a different experience than they did. We may receive a small commission from our partners, like American Express, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.I’ve tried three different ways to automate my savings, and while all three have helped me save more, there’s one I like most.I used to have my paycheck split up and deposited into two different accounts: 10% into my savings and 90% into my checking. When I started freelancing, I set recurring weekly transfers from my checking account into my savings account to build an emergency fund. Now that I’m taking on new clients and my income is increasing, I set up all of my payments from one client to be deposited directly into my savings account. Use Blooom to analyze your 401(k) today and see how you can grow your retirement savings »Saving money is not a skill that comes naturally to me. In fact, I spent most of my 20s digging myself into credit card debt and not saving a penny. That’s why the trick of automating savings was made for me. This kind of “set it and forget …

This week marked one year since I started working again for the Teutopolis Press/Dieterich Special Gazette.I was fortunate to be hired as a freelancer just 12 days after being laid off last year from a weekly newspaper in Effingham County that was switching to a monthly publication schedule. I was no longer needed there. The first challenge I had was convincing people that I would make a difference with this newspaper. I believe the local content has increased each week. For the past 12 months, I have been covering news, public events, sports for both communities.Best of all, I’m working for the hometown newspaper in the community I lived for more than a quarter of my adult life, and a town that embraces the color maroon – I was a Fighting Maroon in my hometown of Robinson. As a freelancer I am not driving to an office miles away on weekdays. I work from my home and drive to assignments when needed. I enjoy producing hometown news. There are advantages to working from home. You set your own schedule for the most part for meeting deadlines even with occasional ice cream breaks. No one comes through the door with …

freelancer vladimir sevrinovsky on covering covid-19 in the north caucasus: ‘the main misinformation i fight is from the state’ – committee to protect journalists

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

Share this:

Vladimir Sevrinovsky is a Moscow-based freelance journalist and documentary photographer who has covered social and cultural issues in Russia for independent news site Meduza, independent weekly Russkii Reporter, and Kavkaz.Realii, a regional service of the U.S. Congress-funded broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, among others.

Sevrinovsky’s most recent assignment was to report from Russia’s North Caucasus region on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In March, he was among the first journalists in Russia to cover the pandemic-related shutdown of Chechnya, whose leader Ramzan Kadyrov has a record of human rights and press freedom violations and was blacklisted by the U.S. government for human rights abuses. Sevrinovsky also covered health crises caused by the pandemic in Dagestan and Karachay-Cherkessia–republics where the number of cases reported by the local authorities were significantly lower than the real figures, according to news reports and Sevrinovsky’s investigations.

Sevrinovsky spoke with CPJ by phone in late June and July about his experiences covering the COVID-19 pandemic in the North Caucasus. His answers have been lightly edited for length and clarity.

How to negotiate changes without losing a client

how to negotiate changes without losing a client

BEGIN ARTICLE PREVIEW:

The most important thing when dealing with clients who want changes is a good attitude. (Rawpixel pic)
A good attitude is an essential tool in the freelancer arsenal that will ensure a good outcome when changes to a project are needed.
Make sure there is a good contract for both sides, even when changes need to be made that were not included in the original contract.
In these cases, there are two options:

Accept the request for changes without negotiation, establishing deadlines and steps in the projects for the new requested changes

In the first case, this can result in an unfair situation because the freelancer will have to invest extra time and energy in a project that is already budgeted for and that does not include this new phase.

However, the freelancer can show their intention to make the changes while making it clear that the project was finished within the received objectives. The client will take this willingness into account, which will guarantee that they will become a repeat customer.
A freelancer can do this with clients who show they intend to continue working with one on the same project at a different level, or who have shown …
