Making full use of the capabilities and advantages of 3D printing requires a very different way of thinking compared to more traditional manufacturing methods. Often we see designs that do not really take these advantages into account, so we’re always on the lookout for interesting designs that embrace the nature of 3D-printed parts in interesting ways. [joopjoop]’s spring-loaded PCB vice is one such ingenious design that incorporates the spring action into the print itself.
This vice is designed to be printed as a single piece, with very little post-processing required if your printer is dialed in. There is a small gap between the base plate and the springs and clamping surfaces that need to be separated with a painters knife or putty knife. Two “handles” have contours for your fingers to operate the clamping surfaces. It opens quickly for inserting your latest custom PCB.

3D printing technology is indispensable in modern car design. World-leading brands like Ferrari extensively use additive manufacturing, especially in the early stages of developing new products. Vincenzo Mattia, an ex-Ferrari designer involved in the LaFerrari project, explains the Ferrari’s approach to design and how the company works with various 3D printers, including Zortrax.
Modern car design is a complex process that takes a multitude of different skills like processing carbon fiber, setting up suspensions and engines, or adjusting aerodynamics. According to Mattia, the best way to start a career in the automotive industry is to get a general education offered at renowned schools like the Italian ISSAM which stands for Istituto Superiore di Scienza dell’Automobile di Modena, and then narrow the scope of expertise down to more specific areas of interest.
At Ferrari, there are over 3000 people involved in the design process and it is impossible to do everything alone. Mattia names the five design stages every new Ferrari has to go through: the demo, mulotipo, prototipo, avanserie, and preserie. 3D printing is heavily used in the first two stages.

Glass-Filled PP Granules Optimized for Structural, Demanding 3D-Printing Applications

A new glass-filled polypropylene (PP) for 3D printing is designed to enable consistent production in structural and demanding applications using fused granulate fabrication (FGF) technology. Arnilene AM6001 GF (G) combines the mechanical, thermal, and chemical performance of glass-filled PP with the flexibility of a proven 3D process, said Royal DSM, which introduced the material yesterday.

Automotive, industrial, and infrastructure manufacturers looking to adopt additive manufacturing technology for low-volume or decentralized production are most comfortable using a material they are familiar with from traditional manufacturing, said DSM. PP is the second most frequently used polymer worldwide, and Arnilene AM6001 GF (G) stems from that base material. It has been optimized for FGF-based 3D printing and is suited for direct printing of structural, lightweight parts for automotive, infrastructure, and water management applications, as well as tooling, said DSM.

DSM Additive Manufacturing experts worked with equipment partners to validate the material on closed- and open-chamber build printers. Its low carbon footprint, thanks to reduced energy consumption, and advantageous life-cycle assessment, inherent to PP chemistry, make it a sustainable solution, according to DSM.

Service bureau PrintLab is partnering with Autodesk for an exciting new competition for schools. The make:able challenge represents what should be a remarkable technological journey for students and teachers as they are invited to use either Tinkercad or Fusion 360 software  (both options are products of Autodesk) and 3D printing to make free, assistive technology with the following directions:
“Design and make a product or prototype that improves the day-to-day life of someone who struggles with mobility in their hands.”
This comprehensive challenge—and learning experience for students—is centered around an online toolkit provided for students, including a teacher’s guide and accompanying lesson plans. Students are expected to team up into smaller groups and use the toolkit as a foundation for increasing their design skills, especially in 3D—with the use of Autodesk products. More importantly, though, the competition is designed to help them find meaning in their communities, whether locally or online, as well as learning about how individuals must cope with disabilities and can use assistive technology for a better quality of life.

Stratasys multi-material, multi-color PolyJet 3D printing process is arguably one of the most artful processes in the AM world. Designers and artists have used the technology to create some truly remarkable pieces: from 3D printed multi-color denim, to Neri Oxman’s haunting 3D printed death masks. Recently, a duo of designers from the MIT Media Lab used the technology to create products with a totally new aesthetic.
The project, called Illusory Material, was conceived by industrial designer Jiani Zeng and computational designer Honghao Deng in their time at MIT. The aim of the project was to use Stratasys’ J8 Series 3D printer to devise a new perspective on product design that was only possible using multi-material 3D printing. Another angle that came into play was that they wanted to create a dynamic physical design which could interact with users without the need for any electronic or robotic elements.

Silicon Valley metal 3D printer manufacturer VELO3D, which recently landed the largest order yet in the company’s short history for its Sapphire system, has announced a joint development agreement with Lam Research Corporation, a wafer fabrication equipment and services supplier to the semiconductor industry. Also based out of California, Lam Research is a FORTUNE 500 company, and is an important partner of the world’s leading semiconductor companies. With this new strategic agreement, Lam Research plans to majorly expand how many parts for semiconductor capital equipment are fabricated with additive manufacturing in the next five years.

We may just have to add this case study to our roundup of favorite 3D automotive restoration projects. Pittsburgh-based HV3DWorks LLC, a company specializing in the restoration and customization of classic cars, has leveraged ExOne’s binder jetting 3D printing technology to help restore a vintage Ferrari from 1969. The technology enabled the restoration team to reproduce a critical carburetor component for the Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 V-12 engine.
HV3DWorks was founded in 2016 by Paul Vorbach, a specialist in automotive restoration and customization. His company, like a number of others in the field, has recognized the benefits of additive manufacturing for restoring and fixing up old vehicles, as it can be used in combination with 3D scanning and reverse engineering to cost and time efficiently manufacture obsolete or rare parts in low volumes. HV3DWorks’ technology of choice is ExOne’s metal binder jetting.

Global reinsurance business Munich Re and technology research firm Fraunhofer have awarded €1m as part of a competition to 3D print medical devices for COVID-19 sufferers. 
Launched at the pandemic’s outbreak, The Give a Breath Challenge tasked contestants with developing low cost ventilator parts that could be 3D printed anywhere in the world. Together, the firms provided a contest prize money and budget of €1 million, while making blueprints and training apps freely available to those countries with high demand. Leveraging their expertise, networks and financial resources, the sponsor companies aim to advance the decentralized treatment of COVID-19 patients in regions that are hardest-hit. 
“The coronavirus has reached every country on earth, but medical help for patients is far from available everywhere,” said Torsten Jeworrek, Member of the Munich Re Board of Directors. “The participants showed that with creativity, commitment and energy, opportunities can be created quickly that help save human lives. My special thanks go to you!”
