Wickford small businesses encourage local shopping

wickford small businesses encourage local shopping

Small business owners are encouraging people to shop small this holiday season in an effort to keep their businesses alive. “We may be small businesses, but we are the ones that tend to do big things for the community and we want to stay,” explained Julie Beebe, the owner of Yes! Gallery and JW Graham. Beebe said it was disappointing they had to cancel the Festival of Lights Celebration and tree lighting ceremony in Wickford Village this year, in an effort to keep crowds down.

Protect yourself from home office scam

protect yourself from home office scam

With roughly 1.2 million San Diegans out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic and seasonal fluctuations, many people are looking for work-from-home opportunities. Scammers are eagerly victimizing would-be employees on two fronts: through bogus work-at-home offers that require substantial upfront investment and through online resume harvesting that results in identity theft.
Maybe you’ve seen the ads online: “Make $6,000 a month from the convenience of your own home. . .” The ad provides little information on what type of work or skills are required and encourages the victim to make contact by phone or email. That’s when the victim will be offered a “business opportunity” that requires an upfront investment. These business opportunities typically fit into three types of scams:
1. Upfront purchase of inventory – any business opportunity that requires more than $100 upfront is likely a scam designed to get you to buy merchandise at inflated prices. These opportunities are often pitched as “Amazon seller” or other “online store” businesses. Victims have been tricked into buying thousands of dollars of merchandise they neither need nor want. Amazon offers free tools and advice to would be sellers at
2. Fake check scams – you are sent a large check in …

‘Virtual High Street’ launched in Wadebridge to help independents

‘virtual high street’ launched in wadebridge to help independents

Independent high street traders in a North Cornwall town have grouped together to get through their enforced closure due to Lockdown 2 – by launching an online virtual high street which was built from scratch in ten days. Thirty-five traders in Wadebridge, a town well known for having a higher than average number of local businesses have joined the initiative which allows customers to shop local from the comfort of their own homes on the Visit Wadebridge website. The idea, a brainchild of local web development agency Impress51 and the Wadebridge Chamber of Commerce, sees traders in the town ranging from craft stores to beauty salons offer their services online, with businesses benefiting from the service free for two months. After the two months free to help them through the rest of 2020, businesses have an option of continuing with the subscription fee going towards the Wadebridge Chamber of Commerce. It will also see businesses in the local area that may not have had an online service before the pandemic benefit from customers being able to access the service while businesses that are already online can also be listed.

Caroline New of Impress51 who has spearheaded the initiative to help fellow traders.

Programming language PHP 8 is out: This new JIT compiler points to better performance

programming language php 8 is out: this new jit compiler points to better performance

The team behind scripting language PHP has announced PHP version 8.0, a major release that may require developers to review code for any breaking changes.   This version of 25-year old PHP introduces an improved type system, a new JIT compiler in the PHP engine and some features borrowed from Python and JavaScript, such as named arguments and null safe operators.

PHP isn’t particularly liked as a language but it is widely used among web developers. Developers rank PHP as the sixth ‘most dreaded’ language in Stack Overflow’s 2020 developer survey, but it also emerges as the eighth most commonly used language.    Developer analyst RedMonk currently positions PHP as the fourth most popular language, only behind Java, Python and JavaScript. Tiobe Software puts PHP in eighth place. And, according to job search engine Indeed, job postings for entry-level PHP developer roles have increased over 800% in the past year.    PHP is maintained by the PHP core development team and Zend, a US-based PHP-focused development consultancy co-founded by Andi Gutmans, general manager and vice president of databases engineering at Google. Gutmans says he’s “excited” about the just-in-time (JIT) compiler.  The JIT compiler is meant to bring performance improvements to web applications. However, Brent Roose, a …

Responding to Protracted Displacement Using the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus Approach: UNDP and UNHCR Theory of Change

responding to protracted displacement using the humanitarian-development-peace nexus approach: undp and unhcr theory of change

Project Overview

What is the aim of this project?

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) want to identify areas of strategic collaboration in situations of forced
displacement.1 The increasingly complex and protracted nature of forced displacement has precipitated
a renewed interest in adopting a Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus approach in the UN,
the international community and among donors. The project developed a Theory of Change (ToC) for
use at the country level to support UNDP-UNHCR collaboration on forced protracted displacement; to
understand how UNDP-UNHCR intervention responses support forcibly displaced persons, host
populations and host governments; and to inform measures to prevent displacement. Responses should
be people centred, needs based and not status based, so UNDP and UNHCR should work with other
organizations to support different displaced groups depending on mandate, capacity and the presence
of stakeholders. Contexts vary so target populations might, for example, include refugees and asylum
seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and stateless persons alongside host populations.

How is the Theory of Change Used?

The ToC is intended to be adapted by UNDP and UNHCR to specific national and situational contexts
as they collaborate or explore collaboration. It can …

Native apps vs. WordPress PWAs: Let battle commence

native apps vs. wordpress pwas: let battle commence

Nick van Rensburg is communications manager for Publisher’s Toolbox. Passionate about digital content production and storytelling, Nick joined the Publisher’s Toolbox team after a 10-year career in the publishing industry to join in their mission to disrupt the digital media space with the PT digital media ecosystem.

Sponsored When it comes to the world of technology, nothing lasts forever. Just ask Sony, whose revolutionary Betamax machine lost its market primacy to VHS, which in turn was obliterated by the DVD, only for on-demand streaming; okay, you get the idea.

Much like streaming dominates our viewing lives, native apps have become an essential, seemingly immovable pillar of digital strategy, the go-to platform for businesses looking to interface with their customers on mobile. And for good reason. Mobile websites have thus far been unable to compete with the user experience, performance and flexibility that native apps offer.

This is borne out by the numbers. According to, in 2018 US mobile users spent an average of 3hr 35min per day on their devices, with native apps accounting for a whopping 90% of that time. And with global mobile app revenues projected to reach $188-billion in 2020, via app stores and in-app advertising, …
